Meet Jane Thornthwaite
Jane Thornthwaite was elected MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour in the May 2009 general provincial election. She is currently a member of the Cabinet Committee on Families First, and the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services and the Select standing committee on legislative Initiatives.
She previously served on the Select Standing Committees on Children and Youth, Education, and Finance and Government Services, and the Cabinet Committees of Early Childhood Education Innovations and Legislative Review.
Since 2005, Jane was a School Trustee for the North Vancouver Board of Education and topped the polls in both the 2005 and 2008 municipal elections. She was elected Chair of the North Vancouver Board of Education in December 2008 and resigned from the Board June 2009 after being elected to the Legislature of British Columbia.
Previously, Jane was a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (B.Sc., B.H.E.) with a 22-year career in health care. Jane’s work experience includes positions in hospital dietetics and community health, an instructor for a third year required Nutrition course at UBC, a Corporate Nutritionist for an international Health Food Chain and a National Sales Representative for an international pharmaceutical firm. As a Nutritionist in private practice, Jane’s specialty was the Nutritional, environmental, and ethical implications of our food choices. She spoke with, and presented to, 100’s of groups and individuals on how people can make healthier food choices in order to live healthier lives.
Jane’s writing has been published in a wide variety of publications and she has been a guest presenter and lecturer at numerous colleges and universities. Jane has also been profiled in various media outlets on television and radio.
While raising her children, who are now 12, 19, and 21 years old, Jane has volunteered for many community and school organizations including; Blockwatch, Parent Advisory Councils, School Planning Councils, and the North Shore Girls Soccer Club.
Jane has an extensive professional and volunteer career on the North Shore and has lived in North Vancouver - Seymour for over 22 years.
